Layered Areas | Sketch Away: Travels with my sketchbook

A type of issues I consider as intrinsic to sketching in India is that you simply’re all the time layer upon layer, wherever you look. It’s uncommon that you simply get an unobstructed, direct view of one thing with a number of “respiratory house”‘” round it. After all, you might get rid of and simplify, however largely I love to do neither, as a result of the layering is so intrinsic to how I see the scene.

From the place I sat at Kala Ghoda, three iconic constructions stacked up: The foreground is the “The Spirit of Kala Ghoda, a barely oddly proportioned sculpture of a horse. The purple constructing center layer is the now-defunct Rhythm Home, the place I spent hours tailing after my sister as she browsed and purchased LPs. And within the background, the Inventory Trade constructing.

This subsequent sketch is within the heritage village of Khotachiwadi the place a chapel and a few historic properties are juxtaposed in opposition to the newer skyscrapers within the background.

These sketches had been finished as a part of the weeklong workshop I ran in Jan 2023 in Mumbai with Zainab. We announce the dates for the Jan 2024 on the finish of this month and open registration then. For those who suppose you wish to take part on this journey, be a part of the curiosity record by writing to me to let me know.
