Kosciuszko Bridge Undertaking
In 2017, the Kosciuszko Bridge, the Nineteen Thirties metal truss bridge connecting Queens and Brooklyn, NY, was demolished; and a brand new cable-stay designed bridge was put as a replacement. Such energy and energy lowered to rubble!
I used to be fascinated, and hung out on website that fall documenting the demolition course of. (See above.)
The bridge faces the Calvary cemetery, the place a few of the males who labored on its building are laid to relaxation. I considered that loads as I drew: How they witnessed their monumental achievement hacked into items and carted away. It appeared like by documenting it I used to be, in a approach, preserving the significance of their work and craftsmanship.
Again in my studio, the drawings turned a degree of departure for a sequence of summary work and collages exploring the dissolution of those constructions, in addition to how nature reclaims industrial areas. As I proceed working with this sequence it’s changing into, for me, a bigger metaphor of how once-revered establishments break down and what replaces them. Which appears very related to the instances we live by means of.
